On Connection

One of the reasons early adulthood is so special is that we’re actively out in the world pursuing connection. Discovering. Trying new jobs on for size. Joining coed softball teams and bridal parties. Looking for love and healthy outlets for our boundless energy. Learning to draw, strum or surf. Adventuring and uncertain.

Everything is possible.

As responsibilities, titles and families grow, time and energy tack slowly toward execution instead of wonder. Less creative director, more executive producer.

Guitars get dusty. Rain checks go uncashed. Weekends without commitments start to feel like sabbaticals instead of letdowns.

Connection takes more effort.

In theory, social media solves this. Videoconferencing too.

But it’s a shared table with smart people that gets me fired up about business strategy, a holiday poker tournament in ugly sweaters that makes me laugh.

A California road trip with my dad, pizza and football with a buddy, and dad’s club softball that remind me to relax.

Unexpected knocks at the door, phone calls instead of texts, and Christmas cards even if it’s been awhile that make me grin.

When time for connection feels scarce – with people and passions alike – it’s also the most rewarding.
